I stumbled upon this recently and thought I’d share what I’ve learned.
As a result of taking antibiotics, I ended up battling with candida four times in the past year. It causes all kinds of problems including, heartburn, SIBO, inflammation, and leaky gut, as well as hinders the production of stomach acid. This leads to poor digestion and absorption, fermentation, gas, bloating, acne, skin issues, more inflammation, and more problems. It also leaves you susceptible to more candida / SIBO issues.
How might you know you have low low stomach acid? Well... You will likely notice undigested food in your poop. 💩🙊🙈 Also, if you have heartburn, you have very low or no stomach acid. Taking antacids further inhibits HCL production, which just makes it worse. Taking a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar in 1/2 a cup of water will make the heartburn go away.
There is a way to test your stomach acid levels:
When you first wake up in the morning, quickly drink:
1 teaspoon of baking soda mixed into 1 cup of water. Set a timer for five minutes.
Baking soda has a chemical reaction with HCL-hydrochloric acid (stomach acid). When they mix together, it causes you to burp frequently, like Barney from the Simpsons... 😬. So you’re looking for not just one little burp, but lots or several big ones.
So here are the guidelines to determine your HCL levels:
If you start burping within one minute, you’re doing great and are producing a healthy amount of HCL
If it’s within three minutes, you’re on the low side.
If it’s five minutes or longer, you aren’t producing any - you’re pretty much f**ked. 🙈😆
So anyway. The first time I tested it, I didn’t burp - ever. I’ve since been working to promote stomach acid production over the past few weeks and was burping at 10, then at 8 Minutes... Which is showing progress... and I’m smiling really big like this 👉😃
Here are the things I’ve learned to do to promote HCL production:
🔹Avoid cold drinks, especially anytime surrounding meals (it stops the production of HCL)
🔹 Take 2 Tbsp of apple cider vinegar in 1 cup of water before every meal
🔹 Take Betaine HCL with pepsin, halfway through every meal that includes protein
🔹 Eat kimchi or sauerkraut with meals
🔹 Include lots of ginger in your diet
🔹 Drink dandelion ROOT tea, add peppermint tea, or fresh ginger and lemon.
🔹 Take a teaspoon of Manuka honey twice/day
🔹 Increase your sodium intake with Himalayan salt
🔹 Be sure to stay hydrated with lots of water
🔹 Take digestive bitters to further help the breakdown of food
🔹 When eating carbohydrates, it turns off the the HCL production, but HCL is necessary in breaking down proteins such as meats. If you have carbs and meat in the same meal, try To eat the meat first... (this is not always doable so be sure you have taken the other steps to help with digestion)
I won’t get into the science behind all of this, because I could go on forever 🤓and this post is already hella long. 👀😳 But I’d love to hear what you know and encourage you to test your own HCL levels.
Maybe if you’ve experienced this or plan to do the test, you could share your experiences yes? 😃
By the way... I know I’ve not been around much... I’m still working on improving my health and am nearly well again. So, but I’m coming back a little bit here and there to share my story, what I’ve learned from all my research, and ways to help you. So... hi ☺️. I miss you.❤️
